A new breed of veterinary teleradiology

H. Mark Saunders, VMD, DACVR, MS (partner)

Dr. Saunders graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1981. After two years as a large animal practitioner, he returned to Penn for a three-year radiology residency program. He completed his program and became a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1986.

After completion of the residency, Dr. Saunders spent 17 years on the University of Pennsylvania faculty in the Dept. of Clinical Studies - Phila. as a lecturer, assistant professor and associate professor of radiology. He was Chief of the Section of Radiology from 1994 to 2002. He is past president of the Veterinary Ultrasound Society and American College of Veterinary Radiology.

Dr. Saunders left the University of Pennsylvania in 2003 to start Lynks Group, PLC based in Shelburne, Vermont. Lynks Group provides imaging consultation, radiology locums, teleradiology and ultrasound services to small animal veterinary practitioners in northwestern New England and specialty referral hospitals in Montreal and Boston.

Jonathan T. Shiroma, DVM, MS, DACVR (partner)

Dr. Jonathan Shiroma received his degree in veterinary medicine from Oregon State University in 1986. Following one of year of small animal private practice in Honolulu, he interned at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital ( California) in 1988, then completed a radiology residency and received a Master's degree in veterinary clinical sciences from The Ohio State University in 1991. Dr. Shiroma served on the faculty at the University of Florida from 1991 to 1995. He is currently the staff radiologist at MedVet ( Columbus, Ohio), one of the largest private referral centers in the country.

Joseph D. Stefenacci, VMD, DACVR (partner)

Dr. Stefanacci graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. He worked as a small animal general practitioner in the Philadelphia area for the next 6 years. He began a residency in radiology and alternate imaging in 1989 at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University, which he completed in 1992; he achieved board certification in 1993.

He accepted a position as staff radiologist at the Animal Medical Center in NYC in July, 1992, which he held until May, 2002. While at AMC, Dr. Stefanacci served as supervisor of the radiology department, Chairman of the Education Committee, member of the Intern Selection Committee and as liaison between the hospital and the international veterinary community.

Currently, Dr. Stefanacci is an independent consultant in radiology, ultrasound and alternate imaging (CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine) for multiple specialty referral hospitals in the tri-state area, and he serves as staff radiologist for Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview, NY. Dr. Stefanacci has lectured extensively, both domestically and internationally, and continues to speak at various local and national veterinary conferences. He has authored and co-authored multiple papers which are published in a variety of veterinary journals. His professional interests include invasive ultrasound tissue sampling techniques and alternate imaging applications in small animal medicine and surgery.

Matthew Wright, DVM, MS, DACVR (partner)

Dr.Wright received his degree in veterinary medicine from the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. After a one year internship at the Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish, WA, he completed a residency and received his masters degree in radiology at Auburn University. Dr. Wright specializes in ultrasound, CT, and digital imaging. He has also published scientific articles and lectured on topics such as geriatric radiology, portosystemic shunt imaging, DICOM, and digital radiography purchasing decisions for veterinarians. Currently, he is the chair of the ACVR Digital Imaging Standards Committee and is a member of the DICOM working group for veterinary medicine. Recently, he published a book titled The Little Book of CT in Veteterinary Medicine: A practical Guide to CT Technique for Technicians and Veterinarians.

Justin M. Goggin, DVM, DACVR

Justin M. Goggin, DVM, DACVR, has been board certified in radiologist since 1998. He received undergraduate and veterinary degrees with distinction from Cornell University. He completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and Radiology Residency at Kansas State University, with additional residency training at UC Davis and Colorado State University. His practice in New Jersey provides radiology consultation and diagnostic ultrasound imaging services for veterinarians in general and specialty referral practice and he is the consulting radiologist for the Veterinary MRI and Radiotherapy Center of New Jersey in Clifton, New Jersey. He oversees the radioiodine therapy program for hyperthyroid cats at the Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Fairfield, New Jersey.

Kip Berry, DVM, DACVR

Dr. Berry received his BA in Zoology from DePauw University in 1980. He received his D.V.M. degree with honors from the University of Florida in 1984. He completed a non-conforming residency in Veterinary Cardiology in 1986 and entered a radiology residency training program in 1987. He completed his residency training at University of California, Davis in 1990 and has taught at the University of Florida, University of Missouri and North Carolina State University. He received tenure and promotion in 1996 at North Carolina StateUniversity. He moved out in to the private sector in 1999.

His interests are functional non-invasive imaging (fMRI, PET and Nuclear Medicine) and cross sectional imaging (particularly with reference to the thorax).

Paul Barthez, DVM, DACVR, ECVDI

Dr Paul Barthez is a graduate of the National Veterinary School of Alfort, France. After an internship in small animal medicine in the same institution, Dr. Barthez moved to the USA to complete a four-year residency program in Radiology at the University of California Davis. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) since 1994 and of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI) since 1995. After his residency, Dr. Barthez has been an assistant Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine of The Ohio State University, and at the National Veterinary School of Lyon, France, before becoming a full Professor in Diagnostic imaging at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. He is now working full time in teleradiology consulting and is also lecturing in numerous continuous education seminars. His main clinical interests include small animal cross sectional imaging, such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Linda Mellema, DVM, DACVR

After graduation from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Mellema completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Following a year in small animal private practice, she did a four-year residency in radiology at UC Davis and became board certified in veterinary radiology. Her publication and lecture topics include MR of the brain, thoracic radiograph interpretation, and intestinal disorders. She spent the last seven years as a staff radiologist at Angell AMC in Boston and recently moved to California with her husband and two children.
